About Gene Bowman
I am an attorney and CPA with nearly four decades of experience spanning criminal defense, civil litigation, international, federal and state tax, and mergers and acquisitions. For most of that career I have done what lawyers do: take independent lines of evidence that do not obviously belong together, cross-examine each one for what it can and cannot establish, and reason toward the most coherent account of what actually happened.
At some point, that method stopped staying inside the courtroom.
Over the years, I have read independently and deeply in philosophy of mind, the foundations of quantum mechanics, Jungian depth psychology, near-death studies, and the contemplative traditions of East and West. The Ocean and the Glass is my first book. It brings the evidentiary method I have spent a career developing to the questions that method is not supposed to touch: what consciousness is, why individuation exists, what suffering is for, and whether the universe is better understood from the inside out rather than the outside in.
Who We Are
I write from outside academic institutions, but not outside disciplined inquiry. My qualification is the method. This site gathers the books, essays, and continuing inquiry that grew out of applying that method to consciousness, reality, and the question of what it means to be human.
